Young & Black
But I am not black
I am in fact
A white boy with his back
To the community he comes from
And can do nothing to regain some
Credit with the groups inside.
At least, that’s what I was told
My Mother said to me that one day.
That I would see the world
For the beauty it holds
Maybe she was right
That there are places of great wonder
But that doesn’t matter now.
With the next crack of lightning
Or the thunder
Whichever comes first
I will end the pain
I am sane.
My mind is clear and determined.
Weep no tears for me.
For now I am free.
